This summer, the Faculty of Odontology at the University of Malmö will again arrange a Certification program in Implant Dentistry. The program is primarily directed towards dentists with a few years of clinical experience.
According to Göran Urde, teacher and Program Director Postgraduate Education at the Faculty of Odontology, the need for qualified training within the field of implantology is great. The program has already generated a lot of interest from all over the world.
What is the purpose of this certification course?
– I have been educating dentists, especially within the field of implantology, for the last 25 years. I know there is a great need for more specialized education. Today we see more mistakes as a result of short and often inadequate training programs, and patients end up wih less than optimal treatments. When I started working here in 2011, I noticed that the University of Malmö has many world reknown researchers and lecturers. Therefore I suggested that we should start a more qualified certification course in implantology for experienced dentists.
What is the set-up of this program?
– It is a one-year course, containing a number of different modules. On three separate occasions, in total 17 days, the participants gather in Malmö. During the rest of the course, the training consists of web-based modules which means that the participants can go on working as usual. The web-based lectures can bee seen at any time as they are on demand. The advantage of this set-up is that the dentists don’t have to spend to much time out of their practices, which makes the program more cost effective. I know that dentists are very busy, they have a lot of work to do and cannot easily take time off from work. All the information can be found on the website and the participants will, in addition to this, have personal tutors to turn to. The participants will themselves choose some of their own patients who they will be treating during the course of the programme.
Why is the need for qualified training so great within the field of implantology?
– There are a great number of supplementary training courses offered to dentists. Many of them are organised by the industry, i.e. companies with commercial interests. Many of the courses are short, some of them only lasts for a weekend, not providing the necessary knowledge. After this, the dentists are expected to perform complicated procedures on their patients. By offering a one year high quality training program with connection to the academic world, we want to raise the level, both for the training program as well as for the care provided. It is a win win situation where the patients are offered a more secure and qualified treatment and the dentists, by doing a better job, will have more patients.
What happens after the program is completed? – We will offer the participants a continuous update of their certifications, probably with a 3-5 years interval. In addition to this, we will publish the names of all the dentists who have completed the program on our website. This is a way of helping those needing dentalcare to make sure that their dentist is qualified.
– At the university we also see this program as a stepping stone to a Masters education, a way of finding experienced colleagues who may consider doing their Masters programme at our University. I am convinced that the University of Malmö in the future will be able to offer similar programs within a number of other specialities.
The certification program in implant dentistry starts in June 2014. More information on the program can be found at www.mah.se/OD/postgraduate
